History of the Yeovil Railway Centre
Founded in 1993, the Yeovil Railway Centre was established after British Rail planned to remove the historic Southern Railway turntable from Yeovil Junction. Enthusiasts stepped in to preserve this vital infrastructure, originally used for turning mainline steam locomotives that served the area. The site is based at Clifton Maybank Spur, part of a disused branch line closed in 1937. Though long dormant, the spur became the backbone for heritage operations.
