Whitwell & Reepham Railway Station

History

Opened on 1 July 1882, the station was part of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway’s (M&GN) branch line connecting Melton Constable to Norwich City. Despite its utility, the station faced stiff competition from the Great Eastern Railway, which had established a more conveniently located station in Reepham a year earlier. In an effort to attract more passengers, the station was renamed from “Whitwell” to “Whitwell & Reepham. The post-World War II era saw a decline in railway usage due to increased car ownership and a shift of freight transport to roads. Consequently, British Railways closed the station to passenger services on 28 February 1959 and to freight on 1 May 1964. However, the track through the station remained in use until 1985 for transporting concrete products to the nearby Lenwade station.
