Appleby Frodingham Railway

History

The Appleby Frodingham Railway Preservation Society (AFRPS), now known as Appleby Frodingham Railway-Scunthorpe (AFR-S), is a heritage railway organization based in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. Established in 1990, the society was formed following British Steel PLC’s centenary celebrations of steelmaking at their Scunthorpe plant. The railway runs on the internal rail system of the steelworks—an extensive and still-operational industrial railway network originally built to move raw materials and finished products around the site. Its location within a working steel plant makes it one of the few railways of its kind in the UK, offering an unusual opportunity to see heavy industry and heritage railways together.
